Be Your Own Role Model
So, I’ve had this idea for a while now and I keep coming back to it.
Do you have someone in your life you look up to? Aspire to be more like? A hero that inspires you?
Surely most of us do.
And this person usually has a few attributes, character traits, behaviours or skills that we’d like to adopt for ourselves. You could write them in a list. These are things that have a certain value to you, that’s why they’re on the list. But, what if you wrote a list of attributes, character traits, behaviours or skills that you admire about yourself. That you may or may not already possess or exude. After all, room to grow is how we keep evolving. This list would be a guiding force for you. A set of things you chase and become over time. The gold standard of the person you’d like to be remembered as.
It’s good to have role models. People are inspiring. But so are you. And I believe that if we could see that to be true for ourselves, then we might have a different relationship with ourselves. One that is not so harsh, not so quick to belittle or blame, but rather one that is supportive, compassionate and kind. If we could see ourselves as our own role models, we would feel lifted and light and proud. Of all we’ve overcome, and all that we will overcome. We would create space for more peace and have more energy to do what we love, knowing that we have an expanding admiration for ourselves. We would hold ourselves to new standards based on the things that are important to each of us.
Imagine if you saw yourself in the same light as your best friend, your mom, your teacher, your coach, or whoever that person is that you look up to and respect. Be Your Own Role Model.
So, write down your list. Include all of the amazing things that you are and have that list be a visible reminder that you can rely on yourself, you believe in yourself and rest assured you will inspire others, but most importantly, you’ll inspire yourself.
